On June 2nd, 1932, George Perry caught the current world record bass out of Lake Montgomery.
The fish weighed 22 pounds 4 ounces and it was not a sport angler’s goal to try for records at that time in history.
Mr. Perry simply went down to the lake with his friend looking to catch some food for their dinner table when they stumbled upon this giant catch!
They drove home where an old post office had scales so they could weigh up this whopper before heading back out onto the water again!
The fish fed Mr. Perry’s family of six for two consecutive dinners.

Roughly 80 years later an angler from Japan hauled in an even larger bass that weighed more than Perry’s record bass.
In 2009, Manabu Kurita reeled in a 22 lb, 5 oz largemouth bass while fishing in Lake Biwa in Japan.
While Kurita’s whopper of a bass was bigger than Perry’s catch in 1932, the rules state a new record must be a full two ounces heavier than the current record. Kurita’s largemouth bass was only 1 ounce heavier than Perry’s bass, the two fishermen share the beloved title of world record for largemouth bass.
